In physical therapy or PT, licensed medical professionals known as physical therapy work with patients to help them overcome pain and improve their overall quality of health. To do this, physical therapy use various techniques, including stretching and strengthening exercises, electrical stimulation, imaging, traction, joint mobilization, ultrasound, massage, heat, ice, laser therapy, kinesiology taping, hydrotherapy, and more. Beyond that, physical therapy also:

  • Review patients’ medical histories
  • Diagnose patients by conducting tests and listening to them
  • Creating individualized treatment plans
  • Providing clear and achievable goals for patients
  • Record patients’ progress
  • Adjust the treatment plan if necessary
  • Educate patients and their loved ones

Most patients who visit our physical therapy clinics always ask whether physical therapy is the same as physiotherapy. Well, there is no significant difference between the two. Both terms are used interchangeably depending on the region. Here in Chicago, most people call it physical therapy.

Physical therapy is divided into various sub-specialties to improve patients’ physical well-being. The most common type of physical therapy include:

  • Occupational physical therapy focuses on work-related injuries
  • Neurological physical therapy focuses on neurological conditions
  • Geriatric physical therapy addresses movement and mobility issues among the elderly
  • Pediatric physical therapy focuses on infants
  • Rehabilitative physical therapy helps patients recover from surgery
  • Orthopedic physical therapy focuses on the musculoskeletal system
  • Cardiopulmonary physical therapy focuses on assisting patients to overcome pulmonary and cardiovascular conditions

To ensure that all our patients get the best care, we have a team of experts specializing in different areas.

Each patient’s frequency varies depending on injury or illness, goals, individual’s course of care, progress, and your physical therapist’s recommendations. Your physical therapist will record your progress after each session to determine the next course of action. Even after your treatment, it’s still advisable to schedule regular follow-ups with your physical therapist to prevent re-injury.

Thanks to the direct access bill, you can see a licensed physical therapy without seeing your primary care provider first here in Chicago. However, you still have to check with your insurance provider to find out if you need a referral to physical therapy treatment.
